Unfortunately, elder abuse occurs far too often. Elder abuse occurs when an elderly person suffers harm or neglect from somebody that they trusted. It can be physical, sexual or emotional abuse. Elder abuse can also take the form of neglect, or desertion of a caretaker. In addition, it can also be the improper handling of an elderly person’s money or possessions.

In order to protect dependent elders from abuse you must first ensure that they are being looked after by a reputable institution or individuals. Always stress that background checks be made of anybody who comes in contact with your loved ones. In addition, be aware of the laws that protect the elderly from abuse. The law states that any individual or institution that witnesses elder abuse, or who have a reasonable belief that elder abuse is transpiring, is obligated to report it to the authorities.

It behoves friends and family members to be aware of the signs of elder abuse so that you might take action on your own. Some of the signs include: unexplained falls, missing items or money, bruises, hair loss or bed sores that won’t heal, malnourishment or poor hygiene.

Abusers may refuse to make eye contact with friends or family members, they may be impatient or irritable or give explanations of injuries that don’t make sense. Abused elderly may be especially quiet or withdrawn, more so when in the presence of the abuser. They may allow the caretaker to answer all questions asked of them, and they may startle easily.

The best way to protect your dependent elderly is to keep your eyes open for the signs of abuse, and always call assisted living negligence lawyers for advice or representation if abuse is taking place.
